Sun Microsystems, the world’s biggest contributor to Open Source (Open Office, Java -now under GPL, GlassFish and NetBeans), has recently announced plans to acquire MySQL AB, the sole owner of the MySQL server source code, the MySQL trademark and the mysql.com domain worldwide.

Many in the industry are watching to see how this new union will affect the development and availability of MySQL, but both parties are announcing this as beneficial for all.
